Teak Cleaner vs. Teak Sealer
What Each One Actually Does
When to use HiTeak Teak Cleaner, when to apply HiTeak Teak Protector, and how to choose a care routine for weathered wood.
Updated October 7, 2026
Teak is one of the few woods that can live outside for decades with almost no help. Its natural oils resist rot, insects, and weather on their own. But how your furniture looks over those decades comes down to two products people constantly mix up: teak cleaner and teak sealer.

What a Teak Cleaner Does
New teak has a warm, honey-golden color. Left outside untreated, ultraviolet light gradually turns the surface a soft silver-gray. This patina is purely cosmetic and does not harm the wood, but many owners prefer the original golden tone.
A teak cleaner removes that weathered gray surface layer along with dirt, mildew, and pollution buildup. Applied with a soft brush and rinsed off, it restores the wood to something close to its original color. Prepare the wood according to the next product’s instructions. HiTeak Teak Protector is intended for clean, naturally weathered teak.
What a Teak Sealer Does
Choose a protective treatment by its label and intended use. Sealers and protectors vary by formulation. HiTeak Teak Protector is described as a water-based stain barrier for clean, naturally weathered teak. Applied according to its label, two or more times per year depending on use and sun exposure, our teak protector helps protect the prepared surface against everyday stains.
The Two-Product System
Teak CleanerStep 1 · RestoreRemoves the gray layer, dirt, and mildew. Brings the wood back toward its original golden tone.
Teak ProtectorStep 2 · PreserveA water-based stain barrier for clean, naturally weathered teak. Reapply two or more times per year as instructed.

What to Avoid
Skip conventional varnishes and paints on outdoor teak. Teak's natural oils prevent film finishes from bonding well, so they eventually crack and peel, and removing them is a major sanding job.
The Simple Annual Routine
- Clean in spring. Apply teak cleaner with a soft-bristle brush, scrub with the grain, rinse thoroughly.
- Let it dry. Let the wood dry completely for the time specified by the product instructions.
- Protect when applicable. Apply HiTeak Teak Protector according to its label. Reapply two or more times per year depending on use and exposure, and wipe up spills promptly.
Prefer the silver-gray look? Clean at least twice a year following HiTeak care instructions. Restoring the golden color is optional, and regular cleaning is still needed.
Restoring Badly Weathered Teak
Even teak that has gone fully gray and blotchy after years outside can come back. Apply a teak cleaner generously, scrub with the grain using a soft-bristle brush, rinse thoroughly, and repeat if needed. For rough patches, a light sanding with fine-grit paper after cleaning smooths the surface. Once dry, seal it to hold the restored color. Allow the preparation, application and drying time specified on the product labels.
Everything in One Box
The complete teak care kit includes both the cleaner and the protector, plus application tools. Follow each product label for coverage, preparation and application.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need both a teak cleaner and a teak sealer?
HiTeak Teak Cleaner restores weathered wood toward its original color. HiTeak Teak Protector helps guard the cleaned surface against stains. Use each product when it suits your goal, following its label. If you prefer natural silver-gray teak, keep it clean at least twice yearly without restoring the color.
How often should I apply HiTeak Teak Protector?
HiTeak recommends two or more applications per year depending on use and sun exposure. Apply to clean, naturally weathered wood and follow the label for preparation and drying.
Can gray, weathered teak be restored?
HiTeak Teak Cleaner is formulated to restore weathered, gray teak toward its original color. Follow its label, rinse thoroughly and allow the wood to dry as instructed before further treatment.
Is teak oil the same as teak sealer or HiTeak Teak Protector?
No. Products vary by manufacturer and formulation. HiTeak Teak Protector is described as a water-based stain barrier, and the kit describes its Protector as oil-free and solvent-free. Follow HiTeak care guidance rather than substituting a generic oil.
Does the gray patina damage teak?
Silver-gray color is a normal surface change as teak weathers outdoors. Restoring the golden tone is optional. Keep following the care instructions and inspect the furniture for issues unrelated to color.
